How to Write a Job Description for a Contract Developer

By Chirag Sharma • June 9, 2026 • 5 min read

Most hiring managers write the same JD for contract roles as they would for permanent ones — long on culture, short on scope. That's exactly backwards. Contract developers care about the technical problem, the timeline, and whether the engagement is well-defined. Here's what to include.

What to Include

1. Specific Tech Stack (Not "Familiarity With")

Don't write "experience with cloud platforms." Write "AWS EC2, RDS, Lambda — production experience required. Terraform for infrastructure preferred." The more specific, the better your shortlist.

2. The Actual Problem to Solve

"Build a REST API" tells an engineer nothing. "Rebuild our legacy Python 2 monolith as a FastAPI microservices architecture — 6 services, existing PostgreSQL schema must be preserved, target is 3 months" tells them everything they need to evaluate fit.

3. Duration and Hours

State clearly: full-time (40hrs/week) or part-time, and expected duration. "3–6 months, full-time" vs "10 hours/week for 2 months." Contract engineers are evaluating multiple opportunities — ambiguity about commitment loses good candidates.

4. Timezone and Overlap Requirements

If you need 3 hours of overlap with US Eastern, say so. If async is fine, say that too. This is the most common reason a good shortlist fails — the timezone requirement wasn't stated upfront.

5. Definition of Done

What does a successful engagement look like? What will have been built or shipped by the end? Contract engineers want to know when "done" means done.

What to Leave Out

A Simple Template

We need a senior [role] for a [duration] engagement. The work: [specific scope in 2 sentences]. Stack: [precise list]. You'll be working [full/part-time], primarily async with [X hours] of overlap with [timezone]. We're looking for someone who has [specific experience]. Start date: [date].

That's it. If your requirement can't be summarised in that template, you haven't scoped it well enough to hire yet.

Skip the JD — Just Tell Us What You Need

Share your requirement in plain English. We'll shortlist 2–3 pre-vetted engineers in 72 hours.
