How to Hire Senior AI/ML Engineers Remotely in 2026 (Without Paying $200/hr)

By Chirag Sharma • June 4, 2026 • 8 min read

The market for AI/ML talent is broken.

A senior ML engineer with RAG, LangChain, and production LLM experience commands $150–220/hr in the US. For a startup trying to build an AI product, that’s $25,000–35,000/month for a single engineer. Before equity. Before benefits.

Meanwhile, the same calibre of engineer — same GitHub history, same system design skills, same English fluency — is working out of Bangalore or Pune for $45–65/hr.

This isn’t a quality gap. It’s an awareness gap. And in 2026, it’s closing fast.

What the Market Actually Looks Like

Over the last 18 months, demand signals from US and Australian companies hiring Indian AI engineers have shifted noticeably:

The Actual Stack (What to Look For)

Core ML

Generative AI / LLMs

MLOps

APIs and Integration

Timezone: The Real Conversation

The most common concern from US and Australian CTOs: “What about the time zone?”

The honest answer: it depends on how you work.

For US East Coast (EST), India is 9.5–10.5 hours ahead. There’s a 2–3 hour overlap in early morning EST. For async-heavy teams (Slack, Linear, GitHub reviews), this works well. For companies requiring 4+ hours of daily live collaboration, it’s harder.

For Australian companies, this is almost a non-issue. AEST is only 4.5–5.5 hours ahead of IST — full working day overlap with schedule flexibility. See how Australian companies are building teams with Greatex →

For UAE/Dubai companies, IST is only 1.5 hours ahead of GST — effectively the same timezone. Hire developers for UAE companies →

What a Good Shortlist Looks Like

We recently placed two AI/ML engineers with US product companies. Here’s an anonymised snapshot:

Profile A — ML Lead, 8 years exp, $65/hr
Built a RAG pipeline for a legal document search product (50M+ tokens, Pinecone + GPT-4). RLHF annotation for a US AI lab. Led a team of 3 ML engineers at a Series B SaaS company.

Profile B — Senior ML Engineer, 5 years exp, $50/hr
Production TensorFlow + FastAPI serving pipeline (200ms P99 latency). Migrated a computer vision system to SageMaker. PyTorch fine-tuning (LoRA) for domain-specific classification. Previously worked with a German automotive company.

Both were shortlisted and presented within 72 hours of requirement intake.

The Four-Stage Vetting Process

Not all Indian staffing firms vet candidates the same way. The minimum you should expect:

  1. Technical screening — A structured coding + ML concepts test, not just a CV review
  2. Domain-specific problem — A case study relevant to your use case (RAG, classification, MLOps)
  3. Communication evaluation — A live conversation focused on how they explain trade-offs
  4. Reference or work sample — GitHub, a deployed project, or a reference from a previous client

If a firm is presenting CVs in 24 hours without a technical screen, the shortlist quality will reflect that.
