• Cloud migration: Moving from on-prem to AWS/Azure/GCP. Well-defined scope, 3–6 month project. Don't hire a DevOps engineer permanently for a one-time migration.
• Kubernetes adoption: Setting up your first K8s cluster, defining your deployment architecture. A specialist contractor can design and build the foundation in 8–12 weeks.
• CI/CD pipeline modernisation: Moving from manual deployments or legacy CI to GitHub Actions + ArgoCD or similar. Scoped project with clear deliverables.
• Security hardening: Infrastructure security audit and remediation. Always project-bounded and specialised.
• Cost optimisation: Cloud spend analysis and right-sizing. Typically 4–8 weeks with an experienced cloud architect.

What to Look For in Contract DevOps Engineers

The key differentiators for DevOps/infrastructure contractors:

• Experience with your specific cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) — not just "cloud experience"
• Infrastructure as Code fluency (Terraform is the standard; Pulumi and CDK are also relevant)
• Production experience — have they actually operated K8s clusters under load, or just set them up?
• Observability and monitoring — Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog. A DevOps engineer who doesn't think about observability is building blind.

Protecting Your Infrastructure Post-Engagement

The critical success factor: documentation and knowledge transfer. Before any contract DevOps engagement closes, require: runbook documentation, architecture decision records, IaC in your repository (not their personal tools), and a recorded walkthrough of the systems they built. Without this, you're dependent on someone who's no longer available.
